Third Sunday of Advent - Gaudete Sunday
Welcome to St. Mary's Religious Education at home!
It's been a few weeks since the last religious plan has posted. But with Christmas nearing, I hope you continue to keep in mind that this is an important time for preparing for Jesus and to continue to focus the season on Him. Today we light the pink candle for Gaudete Sunday (latin for Rejoice) reminding us to be joyful in our preparation.
Before beginning this week's lesson:
Read the overview of today's lesson (more background information found at the end of the email). Then print out the symbol of the week (4 to a page), kids bulletin and Holy Heroes coloring page, and "Adorers" lesson plan. Then gather materials for the activity and set up the videos so they are ready to show.
Begin the lesson by giving each student the symbol of the week to color (I print out 4 to a page). You might want to post it up somewhere during the week to remind everyone of the lesson and then save them in a folder to look back on.
If you don't have time this week to do a whole lesson - at least print out the coloring page and/or kids bulletins and talk about the main theme throughout the week.
Or just have them watch the suggested videos!
Please let me know what works and what doesn't in this plan
We want to continue to grow our faith even during these busy and uncertain times as best we can. If everything is set up beforehand, it should take 30-45 minutes for each lesson.
Lastly, please share pictures and feedback!.

The scallop shell symbolizes two things: baptism and John the Baptist.
Overview of Today's Lesson: Joyful in Preparation of Jesus
The scallop shell symbolizes two things: the Sacrament of Baptism and John the Baptist. Today we explore the relationship between the two prophets Isaiah and John the Baptist. The prophets help us remember that Jesus is coming. We also talked about the celebration today, that Advent is almost over, Jesus is almost here! This is the joyful Sunday in Advent marked by the pink candle in your Advent wreath.
Activities to do at Home:
*Jesus is coming! Choose a quiet prayer time together each day to ask God to show you what your job is for that day.
*Share Jesus’ love! With your child, think of a person who might be lonely and go together to do something for that person. You cold run small errands, do some light housework, or perhaps just drop in to share some cookies.
*Celebrate! Light the pink candle in prayer and do something special for dinner – like a cake – to celebrate that the long wait is almost over.
Catholic Kids Video (SET UP)
Illustrated Introduction Video to today's liturgy.
Watch it at the beginning of your lesson after introducing today's topic.
Watch it a few times if you need to!
Just a note: Sometimes the Homily at the end of these videos does not end up exactly like the discussion for the rest of the lesson, but it's still a great kid-minded homily and usually can be worked in to the overall lesson.

The Kids' Bulletin - Good Intro (PRINT)
The back page of this kids bulletin (linked below) is also a great introduction to the lesson each week.
Print this 4-page bulletin (double-sided) for each child. Each week there's a summary of the lesson, two activities and a comic about a Saint. To print, click the link and select download (You can also view it full screen). Save these in a folder to look back on as the week's go on.
This is also a great thing to read at the beginning as an introduction as you color the symbol of the week.
For the younger kids, print out a coloring page from Holy Heroes (Find later in the email)

Prayer, Discussion and Activity (PRINT AND SET UP)
Adorers of the Blood of Christ offers a great (and short) lesson plan for a Children's Liturgy. Scroll past the readings to find the plan that begins with a prayer, and ends with a discussion and small activity. Print it out beforehand and gather materials for the activity if necessary.

Holy Heroes Mass Prep video and coloring page!
Holy Heroes offers a Children's Mass Prep page each Sunday including a short video illustrating the Gospel of the Week. And also a coloring page with the date and a verse from the Gospel. Save the coloring pages in a binder/folder and you will be reminded of what you learned each week!
Keep in mind these are not always updated until Friday or Saturday so check back at this link if it's still showing last week's mass prep.

Background Information for Understanding and Context
God himself will shepherd the people of Israel.
The Lord is our shepherd.
Because Christ has been raised from the dead, all those who have died will also be raised.
Jesus teaches that when the Son of Man comes in glory, he will judge the nations, separating the sheep from the goats.
