Jesus Sends the Holy Spirit to Help Us
Lesson summary and ideas from Pflaum Publishing's
Children's Celebrate Leaflets and Leader's Guide for May 17:
Jesus, we love you. We will do our best to do what you ask. Amen.
Jesus Sends the Holy Spirit to Help Us:
Jesus told his disciples, "If you love me, do as I command. Then I'll sak the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help you and always be with you. I won't leave you like orphans. I will come back. People won't be bale to see me, but you will see me. If you llove me, you will do what I've said, and my Father will love you because he and I are one.
Discuss the Holy Spirit and what it does for us. The Holy Spirit is represented by water (in baptism) and relate it to how fish need water to survive. Saint Catherine of Siena thought about the fish that live in the seas, she saw a beautiful symbol of the existence we have in God. She wrote that every human being is both surrounded by God and filled with God "like the fish in the sea and sea in the fish." Fish can't live out of the water just like we cannot live without God. When we sin, we are like fish jumping out of the very water that keeps us alive. What are some things the Holy Spirit will do for his followers? (Help them, stay with them, show them what is true, teach them how to live, make them one with God, etc.).
Make a crayon resistance painting. Draw many different fish with crayons (press hard) and then take a sponge with watered down blue paint and cover the entire paper. Let dry. The blue paint represents the Holy Spirit.
Gospel Video Illustration
Each week Holy Heroes creates a fun video illustration of the week's Gospel story. This week they use Legos again! I use this to introduce the day's lesson.

Ideas from Sermons4Kids (and other free materials!)
This site posts a weekly "sermon for kids" which can be used to teach this week's Gospel lesson at a kids' level. Make sure to prepare the supplies you need before starting the lesson. These homilies are a great way to get a discussion started. This site also provides links for group activity ideas and other worksheets.

Craft and Activity Idea
The Mass Box provides ideas for crafts each week. Here is an easy craft to put together to remind us of the lesson this week with prompts for discussion as well.

Watch Mass at Home
Fr. Booth records a video of Sunday Mass on Youtube each week. You can watch it anytime with the kids and even pause it when you need to! You can also pick other parishes in the Diocese to watch for a Live stream of Masses at various times throughout the day.

Honoring Mary with Kids
Catholic Icing Blog shares some great ideas to honor Mary at home with kids as May is the month dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Usually around this time of year, we would be doing a Mary Crowning, but you can also recreate this idea at home!
These resources were compiled by Kellie Trudeau. If you have any questions, ideas or concerns, you can email
. And please share any pictures you have of your kids doing the crafts, watching mass at home, or anything else! Thank you!
